The Science

The National Cancer Institute states “the theory behind the claim that acupuncture is useful in treating cancer is acupuncture may cause physical responses in nerves cells, the pituitary gland, and parts of the brain. These responses can cause the body to release proteins, hormones, and brain chemicals that control a number of body functions. It is proposed that, by these actions, acupuncture affects blood pressure and body temperature, boosts immune system activity, and causes the body’s natural painkillers, such as endorphins, to be released.”

As noted on The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture website “Acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain.  These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influences the body’s own internal regulating system.  The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional well being.”

Research has also shown that acupuncture points correspond with junctions of intermuscular fascia, have a lower electrical resistance than the surrounding areas, and the release of neurotransmitters can be influenced by different electrical frequencies.
